The Gardens of Portugal

Portugal's gardens are unlike any others in Europe. Shaped by centuries of exploration, they blend horticulture, architecture, water, and landscape into compositions of extraordinary beauty, where Moorish influences, colorful azulejo tilework, Renaissance ideals, and exotic plants from around the world come together in a distinctly Portuguese tradition.

Join HPSO April 1–12, 2027 as we journey from Porto to Lisbon, visiting grand private estates, Baroque masterpieces, Romantic gardens, and remarkable cultural landscapes. Highlights include the award-winning Gardens of Santar, where renowned Spanish landscape designer Fernando Caruncho reimagined the centuries-old gardens of several aristocratic estates as a unified 50-acre cultural landscape. We'll also experience the spectacular Douro Valley, the enchanting Forest of Buçaco, the magical gardens of Sintra, and the cork oak landscapes of the Alentejo, while enjoying Portugal's celebrated cuisine, wines, and music.

Designed for gardeners, travelers, and lovers of landscape design alike, this 12-day journey offers exceptional access to some of Portugal's finest public and private gardens. Space is limited to 25–30 participants, and if registrations exceed capacity, participants will be selected by random drawing.

Your HPSO tour will be escorted by Zoe Nielsen, HPSO’s Immediate Past President. Originally from Australia, Zoe developed a passion for gardening at a young age before studying landscape architecture. She has participated in several HPSO tours and has a longstanding interest in the gardens of Portugal, particularly their rich history, varied cultural and design influences, and the Atlantic climate that allowed plants introduced by early Portuguese seafarers to thrive.
