The Opportunity
The Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO) seeks a part-time Executive Director to lead a vibrant 3,000-member nonprofit dedicated to gardening, horticulture, education, and community.

This is an exciting opportunity to guide a respected organization with a strong reputation, engaged volunteers, innovative programs, and a modernized operational infrastructure.

HPSO has recently completed a significant transformation, including a refreshed brand identity, a highly regarded website, an innovative Open Gardens Directory, streamlined event-management systems, and strengthened partnerships throughout the horticultural community. 

The next Executive Director will build on this strong foundation while ensuring HPSO’s continued financial health, operational excellence, and member engagement.

This is a 30-hour-per-week position based at Elk Rock Garden Manor in Portland, Oregon, with limited seasonal remote-work flexibility.

About HPSO
The Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO) connects gardeners through educational programs, open gardens, tours, plant sales, and community-building opportunities. Founded in 1984, HPSO serves approximately 3,000 members and is supported by a dedicated volunteer leadership structure, a part-time Executive Director, two part-time staff members, and an active Board of Directors.

HPSO’s revenue is generated through memberships, educational programs and events, tours, plant sales, and charitable donations.

Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as HPSO’s chief staff leader and is responsible for the organization’s day-to-day operations, financial management, membership services, programs, technology systems, communications, and administrative functions.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director works closely with staff, volunteers, community partners, and members to ensure that HPSO’s mission is carried out effectively and sustainably.

The Executive Director also serves as the primary staff administrator of HPSO’s WordPress-based digital ecosystem and works closely with outside developers and consultants to support membership services, event registration, communications, and online engagement.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a strong operational leader who is financially and technically savvy, highly organized, and enthusiastic about working with a passionate gardening community. They enjoy balancing strategic thinking with hands-on execution and are excited to build upon the significant accomplishments HPSO has achieved in recent years.

Position Details

• 30 hours per week
• Salary range: $60,000–$62,250 annually ($80,000-$83,000 full time equivalent)
• Office located at Elk Rock Garden Manor in Portland, Oregon
• Limited seasonal remote-work flexibility
• 10 paid holidays, 12 vacation days
• $375 monthly HSA
