Volunteering
Volunteering at HPSO can be bite-sized or more. If you are interested in helping at events, be sure to click your interest in volunteering on the sign up page for any event. Someone will be in touch.
We also announce opportunities when available in our weekly newsletter and at our Annual Meeting. Getting involved is a great way to make new friends with a choice group of people: gardeners!
ADDING MORE SUPPORT FOR HPSO PROGRAMS
Donating to a Fund
HPSO has four funds that are earmarked for specific purposes. You can find donation options for all of these funds inside our Shop.
The Lucy Hardiman Perennial Fund is for general operations. With an organization this size, we are regularly budgeting for modern office equipment, insurance, office rent, postage, and wages so we can fulfill our paraphrased mission of bringing plants and people together! A pillar of the Pacific Northwest gardening community, local garden designer Lucy Hardiman served on the HPSO board for 14 years and also served as president for four years. She is greatly missed.
The Parker Sanderson Lecture Fund helps HPSO bring renowned horticulturists to the Portland area. The aim is to enrich the local gardening community with expert insights and knowledge. Named in memory of the late Parker Sanderson, co-founder of Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island.
The Bruce Wakefield Scholarship Fund supports the annual scholarships HPSO makes to Clackamas Community College and Portland Community College horticulture programs. This fund was named in honor of Bruce Wakefield, a past HPSO president, a leader of HPSO tours to nearly every corner of the globe, and a passionate presence at HPSO since its inception.
The Elaine Joines Grants Fund provides monies to research projects and to special gardens of botanical, horticultural, or historic interest, including the support of community gardens. HPSO awards funds to non-profit organizations throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington, for projects that further these goals. Elaine was a garden designer and the first curator of the Martha Springer Botanic Garden at Willamette University and a dedicated member of the HPSO Grants Committee.
