Our garden is located on two lots in the historic John's Landing neighborhood of SW Portland; our house dates from 1895. The garden begins in the front with large boulders forming a rock garden. Evergreen and deciduous trees, ornamental shrubs and a wide range of rock garden perennials share the space. A meandering flagstone path leads into the side garden that has a cottage garden style with roses mixed into a perennial border. Gary's hand-built stream and pond garden behind the house have a Japanese feel with bamboo, Japanese maples and numerous evergreens being the highlight of the plantings. There are gates, screening fences and arbors throughout the garden that help to provide transitions as you move from one area to another. A variety of path materials are used to demonstrate how different path types can be integrated into the same garden.
