I have been observing, studying, collecting and growing plants for most of my life, with a 25 year career as a steward of public gardens. My garden reflects my passion, curiosity and scientific interest of plants along with the environment they inhabit. Currently there are well over 350 distinct species/cultivars of plants in the collection with the majority having permanent public labels. The gardens habitat is a great mixture of sun to deep shade with an area of ephemeral wetlands. The 1/3 acre garden’s most recent history began 6 years ago. It was then carved out of a ticket of coastal shrubs inter-tangled with blackberry’s and English ivy. During this process I discovered my property was situated on a historic sand dune therefore requiring a never ending soil building process. Therefore the garden is irrigated. Currently I have incorporated, by wheel barrow and 5 gallon buckets, over 150 yards of organic materials. There are bench’s and walls to rest upon and a big deck with another 50+ potted plants and chairs that overlook a lovely intact wetland. The site is also great for birding enthusiasts. I have no problem offering my bathroom to visitors. My brother Jeff is a lifelong inspiration in the growth of my garden, who also hosts a HPSO open garden.
