I like to tell people I have a 2-bedroom house and a 12-bedroom yard! A half-acre stand of western red cedar behind the property provides “borrowed landscape” for my densely planted 1/3 acre. Large artistic features include a 4’ stacked-stone sphere fountain, a 50’ bottle fence, oversized kiwi-vine bird nests, and a 15’ natural wood arch. Native plants mix with colorful perennials, 30+ kinds of unusual fruits (medlar, paw paw, goji), and a growing collection of shade plants like ferns, rodgersia, and mayapples. There’s something for everyone: wasabi and cornelian cherries for foragers, hardy orchids and a bog of sarracenia for plant lovers, and even herons passing by from nearby Johnson Creek. Garden “rooms” include woodland shade, rainbow perennials, a white garden, and a fern alley leading to a gong. A pond with gunnera, a “Buddha bed” hammock nook, a kiwi-covered rebar dome, and a front butterfly garden round it out. Recent upgrades include integrated drainage and timed drip irrigation fed by a 3,000-gallon tank. Come visit—sit, stroll, or swing in the hammock to fountains and giant wind chimes.
