Our acre and a half country garden began in the late 1970s around an old farmhouse. Over a period of 40 years, two avid gardeners and plant collectors built a garden within a design framework. Our garden integrates a woodland garden filled with rare shade-loving perennials, shrubs, and trees. Trilliums, arisaemas, podophyllums, hellebores, ferns and other geophytes jostle for space. From there, paths lead to sunny gardens and shrub borders and densely planted perennial borders filled with alliums and Anemone nemorosa in spring. In summer, black-leaved dahlias, lilies, salvias and much more take center stage. Pebble mosaics by Jeffrey Bale decorate the garden. Behind the perennial borders lies a sunny, drought-loving chaparral garden, mulched with gravel and filled with colorful perennials, grasses, yuccas, cacti, shrubs and conifers representing a Southwestern landscape. In spring, western bulbs and cyclamens explode in colorful array. As we are the breeders of the Winter Jewels hellebore hybrid, many of them decorate the garden.
