This garden is three doors west of The Elk Rock Garden (The Bishop's Close). The garden includes mature plants and rare trees such as Stewartia monadelpha, Trochodendron aralioides, Acer griseum, Sciadopitys verticillata, Cunninghamia lanceolata , and Metasequoia glyptostroboides,
and was designed and constructed in 1940 for Anne Kerr McDonald and her husband James McDonald. Susan and John Bates purchased the garden from the McDonalds in 2002 and added collections of trilliums, aroids, ferns, and assorted rarities. In 2016, the Portland Garden Club submitted extensive written and photographic documentation of the garden which it nominated to be designated as a Rare Plant Garden (aka "A Plant Collector's Garden") by the Smithsonian. In late 2015, we purchased the garden from Susan and John Bates and are honored to be its stewards.
