The Plaza Garden is an early green roof garden built as the three residential towers were built between 1970 and 1980. On the surface are parking spaces and 17 planters of various sizes, from huge to one tree size. The plaza adjoins the Portland Center Park with its Lee Kelly/Bonnie Bronson sculpture Leland I on an elevated plinth. Below the surface is a 375 car 3-story garage. Like all roofs, this one began to leak and a complete garage renovation and reroofing project has just been completed. The new Plaza Garden follows the same design as the original (a Portland city requirement) but, of course, with new plantings in the new planters. The design work was done by noted Portland landscape architect Steve Koch with input from a committee of residents. The residents asked for color, four season interest, native plants, low maintenance and drought resistance. The results promise to be spectacular as the garden season progresses and the condominium association would like to share its new garden with those who will appreciate it.The American Plaza Towers Plaza Garden is at the south end of the Halprin Sequence although not officially part of it. Landscape architect Steve Koch worked with Larry Halprin on the Sequence and on the recent Sequence restoration work.
