This event is a true treat. You will learn about amazing drought tolerant plants and gardens while touring two of Oregon's unique nurseries, Dancing Oaks and Daryll's Nursery. The tour begins at 11:00 a.m. at Dancing Oaks with a walking lecture on drought tolerant plants while you gaze upon amazing display gardens. After the lecture you'll have a boxed lunch, tea, and dessert in the pavilion, and plenty of time to shop for plants at a 15% discount! At 2:30 the group will arrive at Daryll's Nursery for a walking lecture focusing on cistus (over 40 varieties) and ornamental grasses (over 100 varieties). After the lecture there is time for more shopping at a 15% discount! If you have dry patches, want to reduce your water bills, or lack an irrigation system, this is the event for you. Grassy Knoll Wildflower Hike & Intro to Using Field Guides

Diana Reeck is a plant breeder and explorer with a keen interest in rare and unusual herbaceous plants, among them erythroniums, small-flowered clematis and epimediums. Along with her late husband, Bill Janssen, she founded Collector's Nursery, and together they traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest botanizing and collecting plants. Diana introduced many fine selections of native plants.

Diana will lead two hikes in Gifford Pinchot National Forest this summer, the first to Grassy Knoll on Wednesday, June 30, and the second to Silver Star Mountain on Saturday, July 10. Both will be all-day hikes, from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m. Carpooling from a designated meeting point will be arranged.

Grassy Knoll is located about 1.5 hours' drive from Troutdale, or 45 minutes northeast of Stevenson, Washington. This hike will be through colorful wild flower meadows, natural rock gardens, and deep forests, to the site of an old lookout, continuing on beyond this, with a fairly steep climb, and following a flowery ridge to a turn around point, then heading back, for a total of about 5.5 miles. If the day is clear, the views will be outstanding.

8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Grassy Knoll, Gifford Pinchot National Forest
