Silver Star Mountain Wildflower Hike & Intro to Using Field Guides

Diana Reeck is a plant breeder and explorer with a keen interest in rare and unusual herbaceous plants, among them erythroniums, small-flowered clematis and epimediums. Along with her late husband, Bill Janssen, she founded Collector's Nursery, and together they traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest botanizing and collecting plants. Diana introduced many fine selections of native plants. This is the second of two hikes Diana will lead this summer in Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Silver Star Mountain is seen from Portland as a jagged ridge to the north east. It is known for the grand profusion of wildflowers that cover the open slopes, especially extravagant in late June and early July, similar to mountain meadows usually seen at much higher elevations. Those who reach the top, the site of an old fire lookout, are rewarded by a spectacular 360-degree view that includes five snow-capped mountain peaks. The hike is about 5 miles round trip, with about 1000 feet of elevation gain. Most guides list this hike as moderate, but there is one pretty rocky, scrambling section. This is not for those who are afraid of heights, or with any respiratory problems.

Gen(i)us Program:
Hardy Arisaemas & Other Aroids

Genus genius Norm Kalbfleisch is co-owner of Woodland Way Nursery in Portland, specializing in natives and woodland treasures. Call them cobra lilies or jack-in-the-pulpits, call them bizarre or compellingly beautiful, the species comprising the genus Arisaema are among the most unusual and fascinating in the gardening world. Whether you are already fascinated by them, or still intimidated by their exotic appearance, Norm will help you better understand the many species that are fully hardy and exceptionally garden worthy - a few even easy to grow - here in our Northwest climate. For the plant collector or the gardener ready for something completely different, arisaemas open up a whole range of new opportunities, as do a number of related plants. Norm will discuss and show pictures of his favorites, describe their culture, answer your questions about them, and have an assortment of plants available for sale.
